HUNTINGTON BEACH...More than 1,000 lifeguards from across the country will display their athletic prowess and lifesaving skills as they compete during the United States Lifesaving Association National Lifeguard Championships, set for Aug 5-7 at Huntington State Beach.
Professional Lifeguards ranging in age from 16 to 75 years-old and Junior Lifeguards ages 9-17 will compete in events designed to challenge their lifesaving skills. From surf swims to beach runs, paddleboard and surf boat races, as well as the Ironman and Ironwoman competitions, the events will crown the nation’s top male and female lifeguards.
“This is the granddaddy of all lifeguard competitions bringing the best-of-the-best from across the country,” said Ed Zebrowski, Competition Committee Chair for the USLA. “It’s a fun-filled, three-days of action with competition and sponsor booths at one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. And it’s free to the public.”
The three-day competition will be hosted this year by the Huntington State Beach Lifeguard Association (HSBLA) and held at Huntington State Beach located at Beach Blvd. and Pacific Coast Highway.
The men and women will compete over two days on Friday, Aug. 6 and Saturday, Aug. 7. All competitions begin at 8 a.m. and run until the end of the day. The Junior Lifeguard competition will be held on Thursday, Aug. 5.
“The National Lifeguard Championships is a unique athletic event showcasing aquatic safety professionals and the techniques they use everyday,” said B. Chris Brewster, President of the USLA. “These skills save lives.”
Since the competition began in 1970, the Los Angeles County Lifeguards have won the team title 36 times. The California State Parks team won the title three times and the only time the team title has left California was in 1983 when Monmouth County, New Jersey earned the honors.
In 2009, the L.A County team won top honors for the 23rd consecutive year. The National Lifeguard Championships are held on alternating coasts each year. The 2011 event will be held in August in Cape May, New Jersey. Beach lifeguard agencies reported over 80,000 rescues from drowning last year with 55,000 of them in Southern California.
The USLA is America’s nonprofit professional association of beach lifeguards and open water rescuers. USLA works to reduce the incidence of death and injury in the aquatic environment through public education, national lifeguard standards, training programs, promotion of high levels of lifeguard readiness, and other means.

HUNTINGTON BEACH...Because the hot dog is such a universal part of Americana, National Hot Dog Month is celebrated in July, the same month that America celebrates her independence. Wienerschnitzel, the nation’s largest hot dog chain, will celebrate National Hot Dog Month this July with its newest creations, the Double Chili Cheeseburger and Double Ultimate Chili Cheeseburger.
Why would the nation’s largest hot dog chain celebrate National Hot Dog Month with Double Chili Cheeseburgers?
“While Wienerschnitzel is famous for its hot dogs, we want hot dog lovers to know that we make one heck of a Double Chili Cheeseburger,” said Tom Amberger, vice president of marketing for Wienerschnitzel. “Our proprietary, world-famous chili is our most popular topping, and makes our hot dogs, fries and yes – burgers – even more craveable.”
The new burgers feature Wienerschnitzel’s signature chili recipe and its new, tasty home-style beef patties seasoned to perfection. The Double Chili Cheeseburger offers two patties and two slices of cheese topped with Wienerschnitzel’s signature chili for $2.29*. The Double Ultimate Chili Cheeseburger combines the flavors with extra toppings of tomato, pickle chips, mustard and chopped onion for $ 2.59. *Prices may vary slightly by location.
